The Civil Registry and Migration Department (CRMD) is the result of the consolidation of the Migration, Registration and Election services aiming to decentralize the authorities, simplify the procedures and provide prompt and timely service to citizens in matters of Civil Registry. Citizens can now be supplied with birth certificates, identity cards and voting cards by the relevant District Administration without undue and unnecessary bureaucratic procedures.
In December 2009 the Head Office and the District Office of Nicosia moved temporarily to two renovated buildings of Old Nicosia General Hospital. By running the new offices of the Department, the citizens of Nicosia continue to have recourse directly to the service points of the department for issues relating to the granting of entry and residence permits of third country nationals for employment purposes, registration certificate for European citizens and residence cards for members of their families who are not Europeans. Additionally, the Department continues to serve foreign personnel employed in international companies as well as foreign nationals of third countries seeking entry and residence permits for studies at an educational institution in Cyprus. Additionally the department examines applications for granding the Cyprus nationality to aliens.
The effort to decentralize the services of the Department substantially strengthened by the recruitment of civil personnel posted at the District branches of the Aliens and Immigration service of the Police (except in Nicosia, which is served in the new buildings of the Department) who receive both applications for European citizens which are issued on the spot and requests for EU family members who are not EU citizens which must be transmitted to the Department for further action.
Since December 2010 the Department began issuing new passports with biometric data, in accordance with the obligations of Cyprus to the EU.
